Q. How many copies do you print and where do you distribute this magazine?
A. Our goal is to print at least 5,000 per issue. It may vary depending on how many advertisements we get for each issue. The more we get, the more we can get it out there! We distribute to comic book shops, game stores, and anywhere really. There are restaurants that use it as a gift and reading material for people waiting for their food! We have wide distribution in Utah and surrounding states as well as national distribution in select cities across the nation such as Chicago. This will continue to grow as time goes on.
Q. How often is this magazine released?
A. Until we end up going monthly, the Sentinel is released quarterly- February, May, August, and November. We also do an annual in October more focused on Bleakheaven and Halloween.
Q. What size is the magazine?
A. It's American comic standard sized (6.625”x10.25”). We decided on this sizing because most of our distributors are comic book shops that give this as a gift to those with a hold.
Q. How does the copyright work?
A. Creators keep their rights and copyright! Our agreement simply gives us permission and license to publish the material in our magazine. The exception is the October Annual issue. Everything in that book, aside from interviews and columns, will be owned by Bleakheaven Comics, LLC.
Q. When are deadlines?
A. The deadline for submission on each issue is one month before publication. So the deadline for November's issue is September 30th. If something is submitted after this deadline, it will roll over into the next issue. It is liable to do so anyway.
Q. Is there any payment?
A. At this point in time, there is no payment offered. We hope to change this by the end of the year. However, we hope that the value of having something published in a professional magazine as well as promoting artists' and writers' work, socials, and websites.
Q. Is there anything that you will not publish?
A. We are firm believers that everyone should be able to express their own unique perspectives in their own way. We are willing to publish a wide variety of political, religious, and social views. However, there are limits. We will not publish anything pornographic, overly graphic, gratuitous, or that directly promotes hatred or violence towards any group or individual. The interpenetration of which is up to the group of editors of this magazine. Also no AI!
Q. Are there any other guide lines for short stories?
A. Aside from the direction in the last answer, short stories should be complete final drafts with editing finished. Unfortunately, we cannot be editors for everything that comes across our desk. Don't worry about any deadlines, there's always another issue. Take the time to make sure your work is complete. Get more eyes on it and really polish it up. We do read everything, and we will give a brief explanation of why it is rejected. We encourage all writers to work on their work and resubmit.
Q. What is the difference between publishing art and promoting a product?
A. We do not charge to print and promote artists' work complete with their socials and things like that. However, if it is a company or individual promoting something specific to sell like a comic book, that would be an advertisement.
Q. If I submitted something and it was rejected, can I resubmit it?
A. Yes! Please do. We will give a reason for our rejecting your work. Sometimes it may not be a good fit for the issue we are working on. Other times your work may need some revisions. It's also likely that the issue has been filled. Please keep working on your craft and keep submitting.
